These paintings spring from a lifelong fascination with the landscape of eastern Washington. Since 2006, I have created several series of Big Bend landscapes. This exhibit contains selections from three separate series, all created in oil but implementing several distinctly different techniques. My goal is to create a sense of luminosity through a balance of transparent glazes and opaque applications of paint, while maintaining a degree of spontaneity.
We live in one of the most geologically fascinating and unique areas of the world, and I try to unveil and express those qualities in my work rather than document a specific place or time. I find perfection in the ancient lakes and coulees that are themselves an imperfection or anomaly. I'm drawn to remote areas that are undeveloped, timeless. I find great spiritual and emotional value in the knowledge these canyon walls have remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years. They will remain long after the last of our kind is gone.
